Madogatari: Exploring Studio shaft
Founded in 1975, Japanese animation studio SHAFT spent years in obscurity, hidden behind the credits as inbetween animators. before 2005, their only notable production was 2001's Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden, a coproduction with Studio GAINAX, fresh off of their Neon Genesis Evangelion fame. But in 2004 the studio experienced a renaissance that would rock the world of Japanese animation forever. Starting out with an untested team in a declining anime industry, SHAFT would, by 2009, recreate the sales success not seen since the days of Hideaki Anno's Evangelion over a decade before. Bringing onboard character designer Akio Watanabe, animation director Akiyuki Shinbo, and a team of animators with experience on everything from Kiki's Delivery Service to Hellsing, they set to work rethinking the concept of the "anime adaption", creating a body of work often regarded as surpassing the source material itself. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Bakemonogatari. March Comes In Like A Lion. The parade of successful shows hasn't stopped. Of the three best-selling anime in Japan to date, two were produced by Studio Shaft. Join me as I explore the creative genius behind Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari: the inspirations, techniques, and innovation behind the instantly recognizable Akiyuki Shinbo style.
